My name is David O’Connell, I’m an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Lakeland University Japan, located in Sumida-ku, Tokyo.
Before living in Tokyo, I studied a PhD at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Yasha Neiman. I spent my days building a theory of non-Hausdorff differential geometry from the bottom up, in the hopes of using these funny spaces to model certain topology-changing processes in Quantum Gravity. This was somewhat successful, but the battle still rages on: you can read more about my research here. You can also find me on inSpire, and my papers are all available on the ArXiv, if you are curious.
My role at LUJ is primarily to teach, and to continuously improve the mathematics education offered to our students. As such, I mostly use this website as a cache of the lecture notes that I have produced for my courses. All of my notes can be found here, and the space is being constantly updated with the new material that I produce for my courses.
